Young superhero raises thousands for people with disabilities

Around 200 adults and children supported people with disabilities during the “Superhero Run” at the Voortrekker Monument on March 19.

A young superhero from Centurion is out to make a difference as she has raised R11 000 for people with disabilities.

Her “Superhero Run” at the Voortrekker Monument on March 19 was a resounding success, as almost 200 adults and children supported the cause.

Young and old, wearing cloaks and superhero costumes, showed up at the Voortrekker Monument.

Xandri Barkhuizen (17) told Rekord planning the event was a lot of fun.

“We tried to do everything ourselves to cut costs and to give as much as possible to Woodside Special Care Centre [the recipient].”

Her goal is to collect R30 000 this year.

The Grade 11-learner from Hoërskool Centurion contacted the monument to find out if she could use the site for the Superhero Runs.

The parkrun at the monument that she takes part in every Saturday inspired her choice.

“The people from the Voortrekker Monument were also very supportive and it’s a safe and beautiful venue.

“I feel lucky to have been able to make use of there premises,” she said.

Barkhuizen said the day was made possible through a lot of support from her family and many friends who helped her bring her plan to life.

“I wanted to choose a theme that everyone could identify with.”

She said people with disabilities are superheroes who also have their place in the world and can help other people.

Barkhuizen said she was inspired by disabled people and is planning to study occupational therapy work with children with disabilities and make a difference.

The funds she collected will go to Cape Town-based Woodside Special Care Centre, which houses around 90 residents with special needs.

Barkhuizen is a cross-country athlete and wants to participate in the Two Oceans race on April 14.

While enrolling, she saw she could run for a charity and that’s how she found Woodside.

“I have also started a Back a Buddy account and between this and the Superhero run, I have almost raised R20 000,” she said.

“The year is still young… I am still working on more ideas and who knows, maybe I can host one more event before the end of the year!

“I plan to do at least one Superhero Run every year.”
