MMC takes his hat off to metro police for their efforts
Metro police have been praised for saving a woman from armed robbers and kidnappers on March 23 in Brooklyn, Pretoria. Tshwane metro police (TMPD) have been lauded for committing to creating a safer metro during March

MMC for safety and security Grandi Theunissen lauded the men in brown and green for ensuring schools were safe, drunk drivers penalised and punished, while by-laws were enforced in Centurion, north and eastern parts of Tshwane.
He said in March, Tshwane law enforcement made an effort to clean up the city by conducting regular by-law and road safety operations.
Theunissen said the members were “upholding public safety and maintaining law and order within Tshwane”.
The praise is also for the TMPD cable theft unit for arresting a suspect for kidnapping and armed robbery on March 23 in the Brooklyn area.
Theunissen said there had been significant successes in the ongoing efforts to maintain order in Tshwane.
He said the TMPD officials conducted several road safety and by-law operations over the past weeks, including the recent rescue of a Pretoria abduction victim.
TMPD said in a statement: “While performing their normal duties on Saturday in the Brooklyn area, the TMPD cable theft members heard a commotion in Hazelwood Street.
“An officer went to investigate and saw two men forcing a woman into a car.
“The TMPD members tried to stop the vehicle but it fled at high speed. A chase ensued between the officers and the suspects.”
TMPD spokesperson Isaac Mahamba said the suspects eventually stopped, got out of the vehicle and ran. The officers gave chase and apprehended one.
“The victim confirmed to the officers that she was robbed of her cellphone and forced to give up her banking details.”
The vehicle into which she was bundled was identified as having been stolen in Mamelodi.
Mahamba said the suspect was arrested for abduction, kidnapping, armed robbery, unlawful possession of ammunition and a magazine, as well as of a stolen vehicle.

“As the MMC for community safety, I am pleased to report significant successes in the ongoing efforts of the TMPD to uphold public safety and maintain law and order within our city. Over the past weeks, TMPD officials conducted several road safety and by-law operations with success.
“I want to thank members of the TMPD social crime prevention unit who conducted school searches in Pretoria North, Hammanskraal and Mamelodi to ensure the safety of all learners. On March 11, there was a concentrated effort to combat the illegal drug trade. The TMPD arrested one person and confiscated a substantial quantity of illegal substances worth R175 000 in Olievenhoutbosch. In another operation on March 21, three suspects were arrested in Bronkhorstspruit for possession of illegal firearms and possession of and dealing in drugs with an estimated value of R17 010.
“During a road safety operation this month, the TMPD taxi unit impounded 24 tuktuks in Eersterust. Another road safety operation conducted in Pretoria North on March 21 resulted in the arrest of a drunk driver and traffic infringement fines being issued. A man was also arrested for possession of illicit cigarettes.”
He congratulated and thanked the TMPD officers for their hard work and dedication.
He said their efforts did not go unnoticed.
