New interns to breathe new life into Tshwane’s emergency care
Gauteng Health’s team of new interns will help to improve emergency care in Tshwane, with a particular focus on the most vulnerable communities.
The Gauteng health department has appointed new interns to help in local hospitals to improve emergency care services in Tshwane.
The appointment ceremony was held at Change Bible Church in Katlehong on April 2.
According to MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, these recruits will undergo training and be strategically deployed in the areas of Pretoria most in need of emergency care, such as the identified townships, informal settlements and hostels (TISH) areas.
“The appointed interns will be strategically deployed to areas characterised by high emergency call volumes, with a particular focus on TISH areas,” she said.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said this initiative is part of the department’s commitment to meet the growing demand for emergency services.
“Given that we live in an environment prone to disasters due to climate change, it is crucial that we are prepared to respond effectively to any disaster that may occur in the province,” Lesufi said.
He said the interns would also undergo refresher training at Lebone College of Emergency Care to introduce them to the clinical side of emergency care.
“This 12-month programme contributes to job creation and skills development,” he said.
One of the interns, Phiwayinkosi Buthelezi (40), said he was grateful to have received this opportunity despite his age.
“I am so happy to be part of the Green Angels and will finally be able to use my training to help my community and provide for my family,” said Buthelezi.
