School found guilty of failing to provide proper supervision at time of Grade 7 learner’s death on tragic school trip
The Moot community has been deeply affected by the case of Latoya Temilton, who drowned during a school outing.

Residents of The Moot have been greatly distressed by Laerskool Queenswood learner Latoya Temilton’s drowning earlier this year.
The school has been accused of lacking sufficient supervision during the trip that resulted in the death of the 12-year-old Moot learner.
She allegedly drowned while learners were participating in a swimming activity.
Education MEC Matome Chiloane visited the school on the morning of Thursday, April 4 to give feedback on the department’s investigation into the death of the Grade 7 schoolgirl.
She allegedly drowned during an excursion to Wag ’n Bietjie Resort in Witkoppen, Olifantsfontein on January 20, when there was no supervision at the pool.
The Gauteng education department reeled in law firm Nchupetsang Attorneys to help establish how she drowned during her school trip with the school authorities in charge.
MEC Matome Chiloane shared an investigative report of a thorough investigation by the Department of Education and the attorneys, which determined that there was a serious lack of supervision during this incident.
There were also no lifeguards on site and no teachers present to monitor the children during the swimming session.
The findings led to legal proceedings against the School Governing Body and the teachers who were supposedly responsible for the safety of the children.
Charges of negligence were laid in light of the failure to provide adequate supervision which directly led to Temilton’s tragic death.
“We have found there was very little oversight, if any, on-site during the incident. All the teachers, including the school principal, did not see how Latoya drowned,” said Meshack Nchupetsang of Nchupetsang Incorporated.
The investigation further brought to light various administration failures by the school. Problems regarding the submission of the paperwork to the department, as well as incomplete or missing permission slips from parents were identified.
The school expressed its deepest sympathy with Temilton’s family and friends during this difficult time.
It said it remained committed to giving its full cooperation to the authorities and to implementing the necessary measures to maintain the safety and well-being of its learners.
