Man dies after Haakdoornboom house robbery
One of the house occupants was shot twice during a house robbery at a smallholding along Hebron Road in Haakdoornboom, north of Pretoria. He was rushed to hospital but later succumbed from his wounds.
A house robbery in Haakdoornboom turned deadly in the early hours of Sunday morning when a man was allegedly shot twice after resisting three suspects who had entered a smallholding and demanded money and cellphones from occupants.
The crime occurred at about 00:15 on August 30 at a property along Hebron Road.
According to police, three unknown men entered the premises, one of them armed with a firearm.
Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk said the ordeal began when one occupant heard noises near her room door and went to investigate.
“She was confronted by an unknown male who pointed a firearm at her,” said Van Dyk.
The suspects allegedly proceeded to search several rooms while demanding money and cellphones from the occupants.
When they entered the room of the deceased, police said he resisted and refused to hand over his belongings.
“The armed suspect allegedly shot him twice in the lower back before the suspects continued searching the room.
“The suspects allegedly took the deceased’s cellphone and then fled the property on foot,” said Van Dyk.
The injured man was transported to hospital for medical treatment but later succumbed to his gunshot wounds.
The woman also sustained an injury to her forehead during the robbery and was transported to hospital for treatment.
Van Dyk said police recovered two spent cartridges at the crime scene.
“The cartridges were seized and will form part of the investigation and evidence. They will be submitted to the Forensic Science Laboratory for ballistic analysis,” he said.
The suspects remain unidentified and no arrests have been reported at this stage.
Police are investigating cases of house robbery and murder.
Van Dyk said the recovering of the spent cartridges is expected to form part of the forensic investigation as police continue gathering evidence from the scene.
Police have urged anyone with information that could help investigators identify or locate the suspects to come forward.
