Pretoria east college welcomes popular rap star, donates food to children’s home
From battle of the DJs to community engagement, students were fitting fun into their academic programme during Social Week.

The Independent Institute of Education (IIE)’s Varsity College recently had a busy few days on campus.
The college is not among the four tertiary institutions recently deregistered by the Minister of Higher Education, Blade Nzimande, after the department deregistered Educor group’s Damelin, CityVarsity, Icesa City Campus and Lyceum colleges in March.
In the Government Gazette published on 22 March, the department announced the deregistration because the Educor group did not provide the required audited financial statements for 2021 and 2022, which i a contravention of the Higher Education Act.

In the meantime it was business as usual on the IIE’s Varsity College campus with award-winning South African rap artist, A-Reece, at a meet and greet session during the college’s recent Social Week.
Nono Likhoeli, public relations co-ordinator for the college said the rapper has a huge following among students and staff and his presence created a lot of fun and excitement on campus.
The meet and greet provided an opportunity for students to interact with the hip hop icon and take pictures. Some of his biggest fans had the opportunity to showcase their talent by completing the lyrics to their favourite song by the artist.

The annual Battle of the DJs also attracted a huge crowd of students eager to witness the electrifying showdown between six aspiring DJs.
“This was part of the aim to showcase the campus’ social and cultural events hosted by the social committee. We wanted to foster a sense of community engagement and fun among students,” said Likhoeli.
Winner Samuel Molwele said: “Winning the competition has reignited my passion for music and has motivated me to continue pushing boundaries and exploring new creative avenues in my performances”.
But it was not only fun and games for the students.
The VC Cares committee donated more than 350 cans of non-perishable food to Tshwane Haven.
The food donation drive was held as part of Movie Night hosted on campus.
Tshwane Haven is a nonprofit organisation that runs a home and supports abandoned babies and toddlers with medical conditions.
