Raslouw substation flares up
Deputy Chief Charles Mabaso confirmed that the fire broke out on Wednesday morning and was extinguished after large parts of Raslouw were already without power.
A fire at Raslouw substation, just off the R55 was extinguished on Wednesday, April 10.
Tshwane Emergency Services (EMS) spokesperson Deputy Chief Charles Mabaso said that the fire was reported at 11:50.
“The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage has not yet been determined,” he said.
On Wednesday morning, a large scale of the Raslouw area was left without power after torrential rains left a trail of chaos in parts of Pretoria.
Much of Raslouw, Sunderland Ridge industrial area, and Lekkerhoekie were affected by the outage.
Ward councillor Marika Kruger-Muller said: “The teams are busy at the substation testing for the fault.”
Later in the day, reports came in of a fire at the substation.
“I am currently on site with FSS security, the CPF, the fire department, and the electrical department, where a substation caught alight.
“There was a team busy testing that discovered the faulty cable towards Sunderland Ridge wastewater treatment works,” explained Kruger-Muller.
She said the rest of the cables were cleared and the team energised the line.
“Unfortunately, one of the 11kV breakers caught fire whereafter the substation was disconnected.
“Please keep in mind that the repair work ahead will be a timeous process as they have to check and test all the panels and cable work as they continue with repairs,” she said.
She said they were waiting for the fire department to clear the site for the electrical teams to assess the damage and what needed to be done to restore power to the area.
“Unfortunately, no estimated time for repair can be given at this stage,” she said.
