South Africa is getting an ‘extra’ public holiday next week

South Africa will have 14 public holidays in 2024, including an additional day off to celebrate a public holiday that falls over a weekend.

In 2024, there will be 14 public holidays, including an additional day off on 17 June 2024 to celebrate a public holiday that falls over a weekend.

This extra day off is made possible by a provision in the Public Holidays Act of 1994, which allows for the observance of a public holiday that falls on a Sunday to be moved to the following Monday.

Of the 12 public holidays provided for by the Public Holidays Act 36 of 1994 (Public Holidays Act), Youth Day on 16 June falls on a Sunday, meaning the holiday will be observed on Monday, 17 June 2024.

According to section 2(1) of the Act, whenever a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday shall be a public holiday.

Meanwhile, learners are nearing the end of the second term and will no doubt be counting down the days – and hours – until their June-July holidays.

In a change from previous years, all public schools – both inland and at the coast – will follow the same term calendar in 2024.

The second term will end on Friday, 14 June.

There is no longer a difference between inland and coastal schools breaking up and returning to school, as was previously the case.

To note: Inland provinces are the Free State, Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West, while the coastal provinces are the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Northern Cape and Western Cape.

DATES FOR THE 2024 TERMS

  • Term 1: 17 January to 20 March (46 days)
  • Term 2: 3 April to 14 June (52 days)
  • Term 3: 9 July to 20 September (53 days)
  • Term 4: 1 October to 11 December (52 days)
