Off-duty officer foils attempted armed robbery at north shopping centre
The suspects fled the scene empty-handed after trying to rob the American Swiss jewellery store.
An off-duty police officer thwarted an attempted armed robbery at American Swiss, Wonderboom Junction on Monday, June 24.
The centre’s management spokesperson Zelda de Beer said the incident happened at 17:00.
She said the incident involved a confrontation between the suspects and an off-duty police officer in the mall’s parking area.
“The officer fired a shot at the suspects as they attempted to flee the scene.”
De Beer added that no one was hurt during the attempted robbery and police investigations are continuing.
She said centre management was fully working with authorities regarding the matter.
“The safety and well-being of our shoppers and employees is our top priority,” she said.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the security personnel and the police for their quick response.”
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said police are investigating an attempted business robbery that occurred at American Swiss.
He said the suspects ran away without taking anything.
“The suspects ran away and hit the boom gate,” said Van Dyk.
Van Dyk said no arrests have been made as yet.
