Police mop up crime in weekend operations
Police officers, members of Home Affairs and CPFs banded together to remove criminals from society.
Tshwane police arrested 551 suspects for various crimes across the city over the weekend.
Officers were under the leadership of district commissioner Brigadier Moses Dladla and worked in collaboration with Home Affairs, Tshwane metro police, and CPFs from respective stations.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said operations involved patrols in crime hotspots, compliance inspections, and raids on illegal liquor outlets.
A total of “237 people were arrested for crimes ranging from assault and housebreaking to public drinking, driving under the influence, and armed robbery.”
He said Tshwane detectives arrested 314 suspects in Atteridgeville during Operation Shanela.
Van Dyk said 236 were arrested for murder, gender-based violence, assault, and rape.
“Three teams of officers patrolled the Atteridgeville area. They inspected four liquor premises and identified two as non-compliant with liquor regulations.”
The operation also saw 31 undocumented immigrants and one employer detained for deportation pending the outcome of legal proceedings.
In total, 1 324 individuals, four premises, and 692 vehicles were searched, with 8 cars being tested to determine if they had been stolen.
“The searches resulted in arrests of 11 persons for drunk driving and one suspect for drug possession and dealing when 13 bags containing various drugs were found in his possession,” said Van Dyk.
He said this operation led to the arrest of 46 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol, eight for public drinking, two for possession and dealing with drugs, and one for possession of suspected illegal precious metals.
He added that 13 Aarto infringement notices were issued, which totalled R7 350.
