Two learners severely injured in school substation explosion

The learners were injured after coming into contact with the outdoor substation placed within the schoolyard.

The Tshwane metro visited Laerskool Booysens this week, where two learners sustained severe injuries after an explosion of a substation.

The explosion occurred at the school on February 6 during break when the learners were playing under the supervision of an educator.

Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) spokesperson Steve Mabona confirmed the department was aware of the incident.

He said, unfortunately, the two injured learners had strayed from the group when the explosion happened.

Mabona added that metro officials apparently had serviced the transformer box of the substation on the school grounds just a day before the explosion occurred.

He said that both the department and the metro have launched investigations to determine the cause of the incident.

The department deployed its psycho-social support team to provide trauma counselling to learners, educators, and affected families.

“Continuous psycho-social support will be provided to the victims and their families,” said Mabona.

MMC for Roads and Transport Tlangi Mogale visited the school on February 11 and shared details about the situation on her official X account.

“Two of our learners, unfortunately, got injured after coming into contact with the outdoor substation placed within the schoolyard in the Fortsig Depot Supply area.

“Both learners were rushed to the hospital, and as the city, we will be visiting them to see how they are,” said Mogale.

She also assured the public that the substation had been safely isolated following the explosion.

“Our electricity teams are on-site doing investigations. We are trying to see how best we can assist the school and the parents as they deal with this unfortunate incident,” she added.

Rekord reached out to the Tshwane metro for comment, however, they had yet to provide a response by the time of publication.
