Two nabbed for unlicensed firearm in Atteridgeville
Police swooped down on the suspects after receiving a tip-off about an illegal firearm
Two suspects were arrested on April 11 at a house surveilled by police in Atteridgeville.
The arrests happened at the hands of the Tshwane District Narcotics Task Team, which received information regarding a possible unlicensed firearm at the residence.
According to police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, the identified house was placed under surveillance, during which two men were observed on the premises.
“Once the information was verified, the team conducted a tactical operation and secured the location,” he said.
He said one suspect was found and searched.
“A magazine was discovered in his possession. Upon questioning, he informed the officers that the firearm was in the possession of his friend, who was also in the house,” Van Dyk said.
The second suspect was searched, and a pistol with a filed-off serial number was found in his possession, along with seven shotgun rounds and 51 rounds of 9mm ammunition.
“Both suspects were arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” he said.
Van Dyk said investigations are still ongoing to determine whether the suspects are linked to other criminal activities in the area.
“The recovered firearm will be sent for forensic analysis to establish if it was used in the commission of any other crimes,” he said.
Tshwane district Commissioner Major General Samuel Thine commended the officers for their continued commitment to combatting crime and removing illegal firearms from the streets.
