Emergency services recover a body from submerged vehicle in Hennops River

Gauteng Emergency Medical Services declared the victim deceased after being found trapped in a vehicle.

The Tshwane Emergency Services Department and police divers have recovered the body of a man trapped inside a vehicle that was submerged in the Hennops River in Centurion near the corner of Rabie and End streets in Die Hoewes.

The emergency service responded to a drowning call on the morning of Monday, April 28.

Emergency services spokesperson Lindsay Mnguni said the incident was reported around 09:00 to the Emergency Communication Centre, and the car was spotted to be partially under the water near the low-lying bridge on Rabie Street.

“Upon arrival, firefighters joined the police already on the scene and confirmed that a light motor vehicle was submerged in the river, with only its rooftop visible above the water,” Mnguni explained.

He said the firefighters assisted with searching in the vicinity of the area for any victims while more resources, including divers, were being deployed to the scene.

“During the search operations, the firefighters and the police divers found a victim trapped inside the car, and they recovered him from the vehicle,” he said.

“Gauteng Emergency Medical Services were also on the scene and declared the recovered victim deceased,” he added.

Mnguni said the scene was then handed over to the police. Tshwane Metro Police Department and other agencies were also on the scene and assisted with scene management.

He said residents can report any fire or rescue incident. Members of the public are encouraged to call 107 toll-free or 012 358 6300/6400.

“When reporting an emergency, please remain calm, speak clearly, know where you are to give the correct address, and give your correct contact number to allow the operator to phone you back should they require to do so.”

Police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed the incident.

“I can confirm that the police are investigating an inquest after receiving a complaint of drowning at Hennops River.”
