Will Pretoria feel the cold front expected this weekend?

Pretoria is set for a sunny weekend, but with the first major cold front making landfall in the Cape, will the chill reach the capital?

While Pretoria basks in sunshine this weekend, the rest of the country is bracing for a dramatic shift in weather. A powerful cold front is expected to sweep across the Cape, bringing rain, strong winds, and a definite taste of winter.

The question now is whether Gauteng — and Pretoria in particular — will feel the effects in the days to follow.

Vox Weather meteorologist Michelle du Plessis said a significant cold front is expected to make landfall in the South Western Cape late Friday evening, continuing into Saturday morning.

The system is expected to bring cloudy skies, strong winds, and thundershowers to the region.

Most of the rainfall—around 30 millimetres—is forecast for mountainous areas in the Cape, including the Cederberg and Boland ranges, which means towns such as Stellenbosch, Paarl, and Somerset West will bear the brunt. Some areas may not reach highs of 10°C, though it’s not cold enough for snowfall yet.

She added that the weather services have issued two yellow level 4 warnings—one for damaging winds along coastal and interior areas and another for damaging waves between Table Bay and Plettenberg Bay.

Meanwhile, in Gauteng, the impact of the cold front will be felt early next week.

“By Monday, Pretoria can expect cooler conditions with temperatures dropping below 20°C due to cold air spreading inland behind the front,” says Du Plessis.
