New Hoërskool Eldoraigne principal aims to make school national success
Retief Smith brings with him over three decades of educational experience.
The new principal of Hoërskool Eldoraigne, 59-year-old Retief Smith, has ambitious plans to position the school as a national leader in academics, infrastructure, and holistic development.
Smith brings with him over three decades of educational experience and stepped into his new role in the first week of April.
He said his immediate goal for the school is to create an environment where academic discipline, leadership, and learner support are at the forefront.
One of his top priorities is to foster a culture of excellence, both in the classroom and beyond.
“I want Eldoraigne to be a school of choice, a place where academic achievement and personal development go hand in hand,” he said.
Smith said introducing programmes to support learners academically, as well as recognising the efforts of top-performing students and teachers, will be key strategies in his leadership.
He explained such recognition not only motivates individuals but also strengthens the broader school culture.
His leadership approach is rooted in collaboration and communication.
“My leadership style is to create an environment of collaboration,” he said.
Smith also acknowledged the challenges that come with the role.
“Some challenges include balancing maintaining quality education with managing administrative demands.”
He emphasised that one of his long-term goals is to position Eldoraigne as a leading school nationally.
“I want to make the river that is already flowing stronger,” he said.
Before joining Eldoraigne, Smith had a 34-year tenure at Hoërskool Garsfontein, where he began teaching history in 1991.
During his time there, he steadily rose through the ranks, first as a teacher, then head of department, vice-principal, and eventually principal.
He shared that some of his most rewarding moments came from working with learners and being involved in school sports.
“Coaching rugby, cricket, and athletics gave me great joy,” he said.
Smith added that it was an honour to be part of the school’s growth since 1991.
He said during his tenure, Garsfontein became known for its academic success.
“Visionary leadership, integrity, fairness, decisiveness, and a deep passion for education are critical for a proper leader,” he added.
In his spare time, he enjoys reading books on strategy and planning and unwinding with realistic films.
Smith offered thoughtful advice to young educators aspiring to leadership roles.
“Lead with listening first. Build trust. Communicate like a leader, and always balance vision with realism,” he said.
