Three arrested in connection with hijacking of courier bakkies

One suspect shared more than ten addresses where other suspects could be found and two more were arrested in connection with the robberies.

Three suspects are behind bars in connection with the hijacking, kidnapping and robberies of courier bakkies in Mamelodi.

The three, aged between 24 and 35, were found in possession of tekkies, sandals and tracksuits estimated to the value of more than R30 000.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Daphney Maila said they were arrested by the Mamelodi crime prevention unit that found the stolen goods on May 17 and 18.

Maila said the unit monitored the criminals who had been targeting courier bakkies.

“Acting decisively on credible crime intelligence, our members apprehended the suspects following a tip-off from the community,” said Maila.

She said police spotted the suspects selling suspected stolen goods in a grey sack, while also dressed in stolen clothes.

One of the suspects disclosed that the items were stolen from the RTT courier bakkie that was hijacked and robbed in Mamelodi on May 16.

Maila added that one suspect divulged more than 10 addresses where other suspects could be found, while two more suspects were arrested, linked to the robberies.

Police went on to confiscate suspected stolen items from the 10 locations.

However, the other suspects had long gone when police arrived.

Maila added that the first suspect confessed and disclosed that they committed several robberies targeting courier bakkies in Mamelodi between April and May.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the items matched the items stolen from courier bakkies for delivery to Mams Mall.”

Maila added that investigations are still underway, and more arrests are expected.

Station commander Brigadier Kervin Deslin Solomons welcomed the arrest and applauded the team for its dedication and hard work.

Solomons said the operation demonstrated a commitment to tackling crime and protecting the community and residents.

“We really appreciated the public’s support and encouragement.”

The arrested suspects are expected to appear in the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court for possession of suspected stolen property.

Police encouraged the public to report any suspicious person to police on 08600 10 111.

The Mamelodi crime prevention unit recovered these stolen clothes.
