Two pupils from Lesedi Secondary School, in the East of Pretoria have had their murder case postponed to July 7 for a bail application.

Mlehalinye Montasi (20), a Grade 12 learner, and Kgotlhello Mathabathe (19), a Grade 10 learner, appeared briefly at the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrates’ Court on June 27, accused of murdering a fellow learner.

The pair face a charge of premeditated murder following the fatal stabbing of Grade 10 learner Lethabo Mokonyane, who attended the same school.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said the incident occurred on June 17, shortly after Mokonyane had completed his exams.

As he was leaving the school premises, he allegedly encountered the two accused, who then started fighting with him.

“One of the accused held the deceased while the other stabbed him with a sharp object twice in the stomach and in the back,” said Mahanjana.

She said the suspects fled the scene immediately after the attack.

Mokonyane was rushed to hospital but died a few hours later from his injuries.

“Following their court appearance, the matter was postponed to July 7 for a formal bail application under Schedule 6.”

Mahanjana confirmed that the state intends to oppose the release of the accused on bail.
