Tshwane welcomes first 100 insourced cleaners
The 100 cleaners form part of the appointment of 231 new personnel across different departments.
Following the announcement that 1 283 municipal workers will be employed by the municipality, Tshwane Metro recently inducted the first 100 cleaners at the Ou Raadsaal.
The 100 cleaners form part of the appointment of many new personnel across many departments, including communications, economic development, emergency services, energy and electricity, group audit and risk, financial services, human capital management, legal services, group property management, human settlements, and water and sanitation.
MMC for Corporate and Shared Services, Cllr Kholofelo Morodi announced on June 27 that 1 283 municipal workers currently employed by outsourced companies will now be employed by the metro. This means they will receive benefits associated with working for the city, including group scheme coverage, a 13th cheque, pension fund contributions, medical aid subsidies, and housing allowances.
During the induction on July 1, Morodi said the cleaners would be deployed across all seven regions, ending the ‘exploitative’ outsourcing methods of the past. The recruits will receive full personal protective equipment and undergo comprehensive induction and training, equipping them to safely serve.
She said the city aims to create stable employment opportunities, and ‘welcomes these new colleagues and celebrates their role in making Tshwane cleaner, safer, and more just for all who call it home’.
The appointments include:
– 100 cleaners to improve cleanliness and maintenance in public facilities.
– 12 electricians and 12 artisan assistants in regional operations to enhance technical response capacity.
– Deputy directors and functional heads across areas such as customer services, spatial planning, compliance, infrastructure, and housing policy.
– Specialist and technical roles, such as fire and rescue officers, engineers, legal advisors, occupational health and safety officers, and audio-visual editors.
– Reinforcement in Tourism, Investment, Housing Rental Management, and Informal Settlements for targeted socio-economic development.
Morodi said these appointments will strengthen service delivery and are a ‘declaration that the city is rebuilding from within’.
