Police recover second vehicle involved in Atteridgeville CIT heist

The Toyota Cross had also been linked to a hijacking case reported in late January. No arrests have been made.

Pretoria West police recently recovered the second vehicle believed to be involved in the cash-in-transit (CIT) heist in Atteridgeville that took place on February 18.

The vehicle, a white Toyota Cross, was found abandoned in a field in Elandspoort, Pretoria West, and has been linked to a hijacking case reported in January.

“The members managed to trace and recover a white Toyota Cross that fled the heist scene, left abandoned in the nearby bushes at Elandspoort in Pretoria West,” said spokesperson, Constable Sibongile Vuma.

“It was discovered that the vehicle had been hijacked in January at the Mmotla precinct. When it was found, the vehicle was fitted with a false registration number.”

Vuma said the vehicle was seized and taken to the police vehicle pound. She added that evidence from the scene was gathered.

Two security guards were shot, and explosives were used to breach a CIT vehicle during a brazen robbery in Atteridgeville on February 18 at about 18:00.

The robbery, in which an undisclosed amount of money was stolen, occurred on Khoza Street, near Bokgoni Technical Secondary School, not far from Kalafong Hospital.

A Mercedes-Benz allegedly collided with a CIT vehicle during the attack, and the suspects then used explosives to force open the door of the security vehicle.

The Mercedes-Benz caught fire, and the Toyota Cross had fled the scene and was pursued towards Pretoria West.

The suspects fired shots at police during the chase, but no injuries were reported among officers.

A third vehicle, a BMW, was also involved and is believed to have been used as a getaway vehicle.

The Fidelity vehicle was manned by three security guards at the time of the robbery. Two of the guards were shot during the attack, and three firearms were taken.

The injured guards were transported to hospital for medical treatment, and the suspects managed to flee the scene.
The investigation is ongoing, and no suspects have been arrested.

The Pretoria West Police Station Commander, Colonel Margaret Nkwane, and her management applauded the members for a swift response.

“We want to urge our members to take into consideration their safety first when executing their duties at all times and motivate them to continue serving the community with pride and integrity. [We want to] bring back the community’s trust in the police by ensuring a safe and secure environment for them,” Nkwane said.

The suspects face attempted murder charges, among other offences, and the public is urged to contact their local authorities should they have any information related to the crime.
