Akasia police raid recovers stolen vehicle parts

Multiple vehicle parts with tampered Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) were found.

In a recent SAPS co-ordinated effort, the Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit (VCIU) raided three properties in Akasia, where several stolen vehicle parts linked to cases within and around the Tshwane District were recovered.

The operation, which took place on March 19, came after community members tipped off authorities regarding the alleged disposal of stolen vehicles at the respective properties.

SAPS Tshwane District spokesperson, Captain Johan van Dyk, said the information was verified through observation, after which an operation was executed at the identified premises.

“Upon arrival, police discovered multiple motor vehicle engines with tampered Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs), as well as a trailer with an altered VIN. Several vehicle wiring harnesses were also recovered and linked to cases reported at various police stations in the Tshwane District,” Van Dyk said.

The unit proceeded to another property and searched it. Eighteen stripped motor vehicle bodies were found.

“These were positively linked to stolen vehicles reported within the Tshwane District and as far as Witbank, Mpumalanga,” Van Dyk said.

In total, police confiscated four tampered motor vehicle engines, one double-axle vehicle transporter, four vehicle wiring harnesses, four stripped vehicle bodies and one stolen motor vehicle.

Investigations are ongoing, with additional vehicle parts still being examined.

Efforts to trace and arrest all suspects involved continue.

The District Commissioner of Tshwane, Major-General Samuel Thine, commended the unit for its dedication and commitment to dismantling vehicle theft syndicates.

Any residents with information related to this syndicate are urged to report it to their local police.
