Bombing suspects caught in Soshanguve before they could strike again
Police says that the suspects were targeting another ATM in Tshwane.
Gauteng police, in a combined effort between several SAPS units, tracked down and arrested three suspected cash-in-transit (CIT) robbers on Monday, February 6.
The men are believed to be involved in CIT heists, ATM bombings and business robberies.
They were found to be in possession of several illegal firearms, explosives, ammunition and stained cash.
The operation was made possible by intelligence that the suspects were planning to hit another ATM in Tshwane, according to Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo.
“The suspects, aged between 25 and 40, were arrested in Tshwane after they were found in possession of high-calibre firearms that included an AK-47 rifle, scores of ammunition, explosives and stained cash,” said Masondo.

Police received information about the suspects’ whereabouts and several SAPS units and other law enforcement agencies were mobilised to arrest them.
According to Masondo, the information led police to a house in Soshanguve where two of the suspects were found and arrested.
Police searched the suspects and the house, where they found an AK-47 rifle, a shotgun and a pistol.
The firearms were unlicensed and had their serial numbers filed off.

Police were further led to Lotus Gardens in Pretoria, where a third suspect was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and stained cash. He was also arrested.
Masondo said that the search for other suspects was continuing.
The men are expected to appear before the Pretoria magistrate’s court in due course.
Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela applauded the team that rounded up the suspects.
Soshanguve station commander Brigadier Michelle-Ann Toohey also congratulated the officers from her station for a job well done.
Toohey urged officers to continue serving the community with pride and dedication.
