Mamelodi East police, together with the crime intelligence unit, arrested a 27-year-old man for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition on Friday.

Police spokesperson Constable Lethabo Mashiloane said the police were on a routine patrol when they received information about a man in possession of an unlicensed firearm in Tjovitjo informal settlement next to Mamelodi East Phase 1.

Upon arrival, the police found a man matching the description and searched him. Two unlicensed firearms and ammunition were found in his possession.

“The man was immediately arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

“The firearms will be sent to ballistic testing to find out whether it was used in serious and violent crimes,” said Mashiloane.

An investigation is underway and the suspect will, therefore, be profiled for possible linkage to previous crimes.

Mamelodi East station commander Brigadier Terence Naidoo applauded officers for a good job in removing illegal firearms from the hands of criminals terrorising the community.

He further thanked community members for providing the police with information that led to the removal of these illegal firearms.

He encouraged community members to continue providing police with information and promised their identity will be protected at all times.

Mashiloane added, “We want to take a grip on crime and we want Mamelodi to be a crime-free zone for everyone”.

The suspect will be charged with the possession of unlicensed firearms and will appear in the Mamelodi magistrate’s court soon.
