Wollies Sleepathon a huge success

Wollies director Charmaine Swanepoel said the Sleepathon was a huge success as people came in their numbers with food and blankets for all the rescue animals.

More than 200 people took part in Wollies’ annual “spend a night with a rescued animal” Sleepathon this weekend.

Wollies animal shelter in Pretoria North was filled with loving humans prepared to give love to animals that have been neglected by their previous owners.

In turn, they were educated on the importance of committing to looking after the pets they choose to adopt.

The shelter was established in 2003 with the initial purpose to sterilise as many animals as possible; however, they realised that there was a greater need to help abandoned, neglected and abused animals.

That is when they registered as a non-profit, pro-life organisation that does not receive any government funding.

Every cat and dog stays with the organisation until they find their “forever homes”.

Wollies director Charmaine Swanepoel said the event was a huge success as people came in their numbers with food and blankets for all the rescued animals.

“We had a yard full of people who not only spent the night with the animals, but also supported the three stalls we had on the day.

“The success of our fundraiser is based on the number of people who come out and support us, and we are grateful for the number of people who were prepared to do just that.”

Giving humans a first-hand experience of what the animals go through had been the inspiration behind the fundraiser; however, this had also compelled people to adopt animals.

“People get to spend a lot of time with the animals. At our previous fundraiser, we had supporters adopt the animals that they spent the evening with and that is what we want to achieve.

“We want to thank everyone who came to support the fundraiser.”

Statistics from the beginning of the year to the end of July show that 408 dogs were surrendered to the organisation, 356 dogs were found, 113 were returned to their owners and 519 dogs were adopted.

“We have a daily influx of unwanted pets from puppies to small, medium and large breed dogs as well as kittens and cats. They are all available for adoption and looking for a home.

“If you think you have a place in your heart and your home to adopt one of our fur babies, please make the time to come and visit us,” she said.

All donations received will go towards the care of the animals at the organisation, contact the office on 079 916 4602 or 067 356 3895 for more information.
