Man arrested after his victim’s sleuth work gets 15 years

A 49-year-old mother was also sentenced to 15 years in jail for stealing packets of cheese and painkillers.

A Zimbabwean has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for robbery and assault as well as two years for being in South Africa illegally.

Police spokesperson Yeroboam Mbatsane said Jabulani Ndlovu (24) had been convicted for robbing and assaulting a couple in Skierlik informal settlement, east of Pretoria, where the pair had gone for drinks in September 2021.

He said Ndlovu hit the man in the head with a gun then “robbed the couple of R2 000 in cash and a cellphone”.

“Though the accused was not known to the victims, they indicated that he used to chill at the tavern they frequented,” said Mbatsane.

Ndlovu had been arrested after his victim did his own sleuth work.

He said a month later, the victim had called the police to notify them that he had located his robber at his workplace.

Mbatsane said Ndlovu was later arrested in his home in the settlement.

He said Boschkop detective Sergeant Moses Lekgoathi worked tirelessly investigating the case.

He said Ndlovu was sentenced to 15 years for robbery and assault with intention to cause grievous bodily harm as well as two years after the Cullinan magistrate’s court also found him guilty of being in the country illegally.

“The station commander Lieutenant-Colonel Gerald Witbooi lauded Lekgoathi for his dedication and effort in making sure that justice is served for the victim.”

Meanwhile, the Bronkhorstspruit regional court sentenced Noezile Anelisa Khoza (49) to 15 years in jail for stealing cheese and painkillers in Bronkhorstspruit in April.

Police spokesperson Constable Munyadziwa Cathrine Ramovha said the court declared the mother a habitual criminal as she had been arrested several times previously for shoplifting.

Ramovha said Khoza had been arrested after a body search by shop assistants uncovered “14 packets of cheese slices, Aromat and two boxes of Grand-Pa, valued at R1 561” under her clothes.

She said a shop assistant had spotted Khoza as she walked to the cold meats and cheese fridge.

The assistant noticed that she looked suspicious as she walked out the shop and asked a female colleague to search her.
