Don’t show off your cash, Rietgat police warn stokvel members

The station has over the years opened various cases during the festive season of stokvel robberies.

Rietgat police have warned social clubs and grocery stokvels to be vigilant with their cash payments and be mindful of who they hire to transport their groceries.

The station has over the years opened various cases during the festive season of stokvel robberies, according to police spokesperson Captain Stephen Maluleka.

“The community must be more cautious with their money at home, stokvel meetings or the shopping complexes where various banks are located,” he said.

Members of the public who will be buying groceries in bulk should only hire transport from people they know to avoid falling victim to theft of their groceries.

They advised stokvels against sharing their information on how much they have saved.

“We also urge them to be more careful at ATMs and even branches where they withdraw large sums of money since most victims of robbery start from within bank branches,” he said.

In some cases, victims were followed to their homes where they would be assaulted or even shot by robbers.

Members of the stokvels should share the money electronically in the bank.

“Those who will be getting their bonuses at the end of the year are also advised to stop showing off at taverns, pubs and other social gatherings,” he said.

Maluleka conveyed the following tips:

– Do not share information of when and where you are going to share your stokvel dividends with anyone.

– Avoid hiring cars from people you do not know to accompany you to the bank.

– Avoid posting on social media about your check-ins and check-outs.

– Refrain from carrying large sums of money.

– Be careful of stokvel members who are behind on their savings, some may have ill intentions.

– Avoid showing off new things that you bought with your money.

– The stokvel’s executive can make arrangements with the bank to transfer their cash directly to each member’s account instead of physically collecting cash.
