TUT students that know how to hack it, get commemorated

“It is important that we support and encourage innovation and technologically driven solutions to enhance service delivery and improve the lives of our residents,” says finance MMC Peter Sutton.

The metro recently attended the Tshwane Varsity Hackathon (TVH) award ceremony that honours bright young minds pushing technological innovation through competition.

This annual competition is open to all higher learning institutions and gives students the opportunity to use technology to solve some of the issues affecting society currently.

MMC for finance Peter Sutton said that the metro is in full support of the TVH as it aligns closely with the City’s objective announced at the state of the capital address of building a data-driven city to fast-track service delivery.

“I want to congratulate all the winners,” said Sutton.

“It is important that we support and encourage innovation and technologically driven solutions to enhance service delivery and improve the lives of our residents.”

The first prize went to the eight-person team of young students that invented Cloud Docket, to prevent the criminal justice problem of case dockets “growing legs” and going missing.

He said when cases go missing, criminals who committed heinous crimes got away scot-free.

Cloud Docket would ensure that case dockets enter and remain in a digital space where theft or misplacement would become far less likely.

The runner-up prize was awarded to Exclusive Code 8 Solution, an app through which customers can buy services such as painting, plumbing and bricklaying among others. Providers register and advertise their services to prospective employers via the App.

The third prize was awarded to One City, online bartering where residents that owe a municipality can offer their expert services to the metro in lieu of their debt.

He said the metro hopes young students would continued to come up with new ways for it to become more efficient.
