Central SAPS give residents safety tips

“This was one of the outreach programmes that seek to educate and inform the community about new criminal patterns,” says spokesperson.

Under the theme of “vigilant at all times”, members of the central police recently engaged with residents around Burgers Park on how not to fall victim to crime in the area.

Pamphlets were handed out to both pedestrians and motorists with information that sensitised residents on the importance of being safety-conscious in the face of threats.

“This was one of the outreach programmes that seek to educate and inform the community about new criminal patterns,” said spokesperson Constable Thabang Nkhumise.

Nkhumise also held a telephonic interview on Monday, March 13 with a local radio station about safety in the inner city.

Tips given to both motorists and pedestrians were:

– refrain from walking in isolated areas

– don’t use a cell phone in public

– remain watchful and report any criminal activity to authorities

– park in areas officially designated for that purpose

– avoid leaving valuable items inside your vehicle

– never lift strangers.

– refrain from stopping or parking in secluded areas.

– when faced with a life-threatening situation, cooperate for the best chance of saving your life

“The station is working tirelessly to ensure that there’s more visibility as several new police officials, reservists and patrollers have been deployed in various parts of the city to combat crime,” station commander Brigadier MM Dladla reassured residents.

Brigadier Dladla also urged the community to assist the police and report crime anonymously on 08600 10111 or 112 on any network provider and follow the prompts.
