Tshwane buses will run on Monday despite ‘national shutdown’ – metro

According to the metro, it will be 'business as usual' for Tshwane bus services on Monday.

Tshwane bus services are expected to be running on Monday, March 20, despite the EFF’s planned national shutdown.

“It will be business as usual,” said metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.

“It is not a public holiday and we don’t want our commuters to be stranded.”

However, Mashigo, said they will be very cautious.

“Should our assets and employees be under threat, we might recall them for safety reasons.

“This is based on the previous violent protests experienced whereby our buses got targeted and used to blockade roads while drivers were intimidated and assaulted.”

He said should plans change, commuters will be alerted on time.

“Our drivers reside within the communities and should they not be able to report for work, we will communicate the service disruption to commuters.

“It is very difficult to predict what might happen on the day; hence, commuters will be advised to consider other means of travelling should there be no busses on scheduled time in their areas,” Mashigo explained.

The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) Gauteng has strongly refused to be associated with the protest.

“We are not going to be part of this political fight. We are not a political party, but a transport organisation,” said Graham Fritz, the secretary of Santaco Gauteng region.

“It will be a normal working day for us.”

Fritz said they did not want to participate in this because it will further destabilise the already fragile economy.

“Our economy is at the brink of collapsing so losing a working day will mean a knock to the economy and it is us who will feel the pinch.”
