Tshwane EMS conducts mock exercise with BP fuel tanker in Pretoria
“The exercise is aimed at strengthening relations in the response and management of petrochemical incidents in line with each discipline's emergency response procedures."
Tshwane emergency services, BP Waltloo and various stakeholders will be holding a mock exercise involving a petrol tanker accident on Waltloo Street in Pretoria on Thursday.
According to the Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Charles Mabaso, the mock exercise was aimed at strengthening relations between the stakeholders.
“The exercise is aimed at strengthening relations in the response and management of petrochemical incidents in line with each discipline’s emergency response procedures,” Mabaso said.

He advised motorists that Waltloo Road and Petroleum Street will remain closed for the duration of the exercise.
Furthermore, Mabaso said the traffic officers were directing traffic to other alternative routes.
“Mock exercises are an important aspect of disaster management. These exercises are conducted on various natural and man-made disasters for keeping readiness and emergency preparedness.
“They aim to prevent incidents such as the devastating explosion of a fuel tanker in Boksburg in December of last year,” Mabaso said.

The blast resulted in the deaths of at least 41 people and left several others injured.
