Everything you need to know about the “national shutdown”
Much has been said about the national shutdown due to take place on Monday, March 20, 2023. Here is everything you need to know on what to expect and what could happen on the day.

Monday, March 20, 2023 is the day the EFF political party has chosen for its so-called “national shutdown”.
Prior to the day, the party has approached various establishments to encourage them not to do business on the day due to the protest.
Last week, EFF leader Julius Malema told the media at a press conference that the shutdown would go ahead as planned on Monday.

Many were worried that they would not be able to get to work on the day.
However, most transport agencies stated last week that it would be “business as usual”.

Police also voiced their commitment to ensuring that everyone remained safe on the day.
Speaking on behalf of JCPS, police minister Bheki Cele said measures have been put in place to ensure that people can go to work, travel for leisure and do business in a safe and secure environment.

Residents were encouraged to make use of the following tips on the day:
– Don’t confront protesters.
– Be alert for large groupings of people.
– Be in contact with the local security services of shopping centres for any developments or warnings.
– Discuss an action plan with staff for when any potential situations are reported.
– Ensure that the local police station number is available to staff or call 10111 to report suspicious gatherings.
