Metro yet to approve procedure for buying from power energy producers

The policy needs council approval before it can be implemented.

Tshwane metro is yet to finalise the process for buying electricity from independent power producers (IPPs).

In the communique issued on Thursday, the municipality confirmed that it had approved the embedded generation policy and application procedure for small scale embedded generation (SSEG) to allow IPPs to register to supply power.

“Customers cannot sell their excess electricity to the city as yet. Meanwhile, the city is also working on the finalisation of the energy policy which will entail processes and procedures including applications to sell electricity back to the city,” metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said.

Recently the metro said IPPs could apply to sell their excess power to it but council still needed to approve the energy policy before it could be implemented.

“All the resident needs to do is complete an application form and submit it to the municipality. The application will be assessed internally. If all is correct, approval will be granted and the applicant will be informed,” Mashigo said at the time.

“The plan is to have the said policy finalised and approved in the 2023/24 financial year.”

The metro had welcomed President Cyril Ramaphosa’s state of disaster regulations aimed at minimising the impact of load-shedding saying they would help it implement measures to mitigate load-shedding.

“Not all proposed measures are, however, implementable because they are beyond the municipality’s reach,” he said.

He added that approved IPPs would “continue with the installation of the SSEG as per the approval, and the system will be commissioned”.
