Over 2 000 tyres removed from streets ahead of EFF protest

“They arrived on duty again late last night at 22:00 and are still busy now,” De Jager continued.

A law enforcement operation removed 2 414 tyres from Pretoria’s streets at the weekend.

Local ward 92 councilor, Leanne de Jager said this was done to prevent their use in criminal activity by protesters.

The country found itself in nervous anticipation over what may transpire during the EFF’s national shutdown, though some parties refuse to wait and see what the red berets have in store but opting to rather take preemptive measures to minimise potential threats.

“There was a huge operation and still is in Sunnyside, CBD, Arcadia with SAPS, Tshwane metro police (TMPD), security companies and others,” said De Jager.

“They arrived on duty again late last night at 22:00 and are still busy now.”

On Struben Street, 95 tyres were collected.

On Grant Street in Marabastad, 50 tyres were removed.

On Struben and Cowie streets this morning, a further 69 tyres were removed as well as in many other areas across central Pretoria.

The operation mainly took place in Region 3 (Arcadia, Sunnyside, Marabastad, CBD, etc).

“Thank you to Ella Grobbelaar and her team at the City of Tshwane, working with the police and private security companies to remove truckloads of tyres across the city. We still have excellent people who go above and beyond for our city,” said mayoral candidate, Cilliers Brink.

Other parties involved elected to not be named publicly over safety concerns.

The EFF’s national shutdown, which has been in the works for months has seen widespread preparations take place regarding the storm that may arrive.

The SANDF has reportedly deployed thousands of soldiers in different areas of the country along with the police, who vow not to let anarchy prevail.

This comes after the DA successfully obtained a court interdict preventing the EFF from undertaking any illegal activity.

Government intelligence Natjoints recently announced that it has in the last 12 hours arrested 87 protesters across the country for public violence-related offences.

“Law enforcement officers are on high alert and will continue to prevent and combat any acts of criminality, maintain public order, protect the inhabitants of South Africa and their property as well as uphold and enforce the law,” said spokesperson for Natjoints Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.
