Lenchen traffic signal adjustment hoped to make a difference
Ward councillor says traffic network is experiencing 'growing pains'.
A ten-second adjustment to the traffic lights at the intersection of Lenchen and Rooihuiskraal will hopefully make a big difference to morning commuters in the area.
On February 28, councillor Cindy Billson received a message from a resident alerting her to traffic delays as motorists were not given enough time to turn into the New Lenchen road.
The resident also noted that a similar issue was being experienced at nearby intersections such as the one at Lenchen Road and Capensis Ave and Rooihuiskraal Road and Theuns van Niekerk Street intersections.
Billson said that because the Lenchen Road extension that opened early this year was so new, the traffic network in the area would experience “growing pains”, but that the matter was being attended to with urgency.
“I have been getting so many complaints about this. I want to tell people to be patient. The matter is being attended to.”
She added that residents should continue reporting such problems to the Tshwane customer care channels, or by contacting their ward councillor.
“The metro is looking into it, but it will take some time to understand the traffic flows.”
Following the initial complaint, the metro undertook surveys of the area to calculate how the traffic flows could be eased.
Once the surveys were completed, a revised morning timing plan was implemented, which now has a cycle time of 90 seconds instead of the previous 80 seconds.
As part of the extended cycle, a new lagging stage with added “green time” was added to allow more time for motorists to proceed through the intersection.
The morning plans for the other traffic signals were also adjusted to keep the intersections synchronised for the best traffic flow situations.
The survey found that the afternoon, off-peak and night capacities were within acceptable standards, and therefore no changes have been made at these times.
