Man talked down from jumping off Sunnyside police station roof

The entire negotiation lasted for approximately several hours.

Police and emergency services responded to a call about a man threatening to jump off the roof of the Sunnyside police station.

The incident took place this past Human Right’s Day (March 21), and Tshwane emergency services (EMS) reportedly arrived on the scene at 10:00.

Multiple police vehicles and a fire truck responded to Leyds Street, Sunnyside as onlookers gathered.

“When EMS arrived, we waited with the SAPS as a qualified negotiator was called to assist with the situation,” said Tshwane EMS spokesperson, Charles Mabaso.

Upon arrival, the negotiator was then hoisted up onto the rooftop using the fire truck ladder to convince the man not to carry out his plan.

“The negotiator had informed us that the man had wanted to talk to a chaplain of the church. We thus made arrangements for a chaplain to come to the scene and try to talk the gentleman down,” Mabaso continued.

After the clergyman and negotiator both spoke to the man on the roof, he eventually agreed to come down safely, though only after instructing police and EMS to back away from the scene.

The entire negotiation lasted several hours.

“Once we could confirm that the gentleman was safely removed from the roof, EMS departed and the scene and man were handed to the police service for further investigation,” Mabaso concluded.
