Pta hotels feeding Central learners

Schools that have currently benefitted from the effort include Arcadia Primary School and Pretoria Technical High School.

Local stakeholders that have been donating food to Arcadia school learners say that more help is needed.

Tshwane metro officials, a collection of various hotels, and the Arcadia City Improvement District (CID) have been donating food parcels as part of a ward 92 pilot project.

Ward councillor Leanne de Jager said that the effort was undertaken to “ensure learners do not go to school hungry”.

Schools that have currently benefitted from the effort include Arcadia Primary School and Pretoria Technical High School.

“I discussed this with Arcadia CID who approached various hotels in and around Arcadia. A programme was started to supply lunch packs every Friday to the school to hand out to the learners who are part of their indigent programme,” De Jager continued.

The schools informed the stakeholders of how many learners they have and each Friday there’s a rotation among hotels to ensure every learner is fed.

The effort began in late 2022 and Christmas hampers were provided in December and Easter hampers are planned to be provided when schools break for the holidays.

Pretoria Technical High School has also stated the need for toiletries and supplies for their learners.

De Jager said it’s a challenge that stakeholders have been trying to overcome, including providing stationery.

The stakeholders are holding out on announcing whether the effort will spread to other schools and regions, as they intend to do a six-month assessment soon.

“For now it is a ward 92 project and other schools in the ward are welcome to make contact but we would rather wait until the six months have passed so that we can analyze to see whether it is sustainable,” De Jager concluded.
