TUT to launch artificial intelligence hub

“The Al Institute of South Africa has the ability to reduce youth unemployment by informing the skills that will turn them into job creators and shapers of the 21st-century workplace.”

A new Artificial Intelligence (AI) hub, launched by the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and the University of Johannesburg (UJ), will put South Africa on the digital map.

This was according to TUT vice-chancellor Prof Maluleke.

“Our role in the establishment of the AI Institute of SA is the clearest articulation of our university’s intention to take its place in the construction of the technological future of the country,” said Maluleke.

“This is a world in which AI is becoming both ubiquitous and indispensable.”

The Artificial Intelligence Institute of SA will be launched on Friday, March 24, according to the Gauteng communications department.

TUT has numerous AI projects linked to the government, which will be showcased at the launch.

These projects include AI capacity building for public servants, AI motor industry infrastructure enhancement programmes, modernising public services and AI in farming and food production.

These projects target three sectors of the country’s economy, namely 4IR in manufacturing (value chain), healthcare, and farming/agriculture and food processing (Agriculture 5.0).

“The institute can reduce youth unemployment by informing the skills that will turn them into job creators and shapers of the 21st-century workplace,” Maluleke said.

“The institute’s establishment is a testament to the collective agility and impact of the two universities, which reaches far beyond South Africa’s borders to Africa and elsewhere in the world,” said UJ vice-chancellor Letlhokwa Mpedi.

“It presents SA with the opportunity to reskill the labour force for a digital future whereby working collaboratively with machines will be normal.”

Communications and digital technologies minister Mondli Gungubele said TUT and UJ were already illustrating how AI can become the engine of economic advancement in various sectors.
