Mams CPF elects first woman chairperson

The first thing CPF need to do is to improve what we have.

Mamelodi West CPF has elected its first-ever woman as a chairperson.

Zoey Masuku kaMasango, elected at a recent local CPF meeting, said a lot needed to be done and couldn’t be done overnight.

She said the first thing her CPF needed to do was to do better with the little resources it had.

“To fight crime within our different communities, we need to start by reviving all the structures in the policing sector.

All the stakeholders need to attend the same meetings to build networks with each other through communication and educating each other more,” she said.

She said her CPF needed to revive street committees and neighbourhood watch groups and build a good working relationship with the police and other CPFs.

“We all need each other to have a safe community and crime-free zones. The community members are our eyes and ears on the ground,” she said.

“So far we have identified hotspots and have already deployed our members of Siyabangena, working with the Mamelodi police, there.”

She said the youth structures or youth desk needed to be revived since it was no longer active, and use EPWP and patroller programmes within the Gauteng Department of Community Safety to contribute to youth employment.

They said the department offered EPWP workers and patrollers stipends.

“The unemployed youth need to join these programmes and also volunteer at some community projects to gain experience in different fields,” she said.

Masango said she had volunteered in the CPF for more than 10 years and also her social worker auxiliary practicals.

She said volunteering helped beef up one’s CV.

But she warned the neighbourhood watch groups to work hand in hand with the police when they apprehend a suspect because the CPF code of conduct was clear that “we don’t take the law into our own hands”.

Masango encouraged different community members to start forming chat groups to fight crime within their communities.

She said the CPF needed everyone to come on board and pleaded with local businesses to donate reflector jackets to the CPF so its members are easily identifiable.
