Centurion residents fill 5-ton truck with recyclables

They filled a 5-ton truck with electronic equipment such as leave blowers, washing machines, and old computer equipment and one trailer with paper.

Many Centurion residents gathered at Eldoraigne ward 79 for a recycling campaign on Saturday.

Local ward councillor Cindy Billson said they started this recycling campaign in 2018 in ward 79 and have been hosting it in different wards every month since 2019.

The ward has been working closely with a local recycling company BluSwirl to remove recycled waste and sort out recyclable materials after collection.

During the campaign, residents brought in materials they no longer use such as globes, batteries, electrical appliances, paper, glass plastics, and tins.

“We had about 153 people that brought stuff all over Centurion,” said Billson.

After the collection, they sorted the recyclables into categories and sent them off to make new materials.

Billson urged Centurion residents to join in on such campaigns that will help benefit the city.

“Recycling is important because it helps to reduce the amount of garbage we produce, as well as the pollution created from incineration or using landfill sites.

“The benefits of recycling extend beyond just reducing the amount of garbage produced by an individual or city,” she said.
