Swamped Magalieskruin Garden refuse site temporarily closed
The metro has warned residents to refrain from dumping illegally on the parameters of the garden refuse sites as they would be slapped with a R5 000 fine.
Tshwane metro has temporarily closed the stinking, overwhelmed Magalieskruin Garden refuse site at Sinoville in the north of Pretoria for it to be cleared and rehabilitated.
The site will remain closed until Sunday, December 3.
Metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba said the city had to close the site to clear the backlog and bring it back to its normal state of operation.
He said the backlog was created by services that were discontinued due to the municipal strike that lasted more than three months.
The site will return to its normal operations on Monday, December 4.
As most of Tshwane’s garden refuse sites have been overwhelmed due to the strike, residents are advised to make use of these landfill sites nearby:
– Bronkhorstspruit landfill site in Zithobeni Road
– Ga-Rankuwa landfill site on Molefe Makinta Road
– Soshanguve landfill site on the corner of Molefe Makinta and Soutpan roads
– Hatherley landfill site located in Solomon Mahlangu Drive, Nellmapius
Bokaba said subsequently, the city will on Friday, November 24, close the Kruger Avenue Garden refuse site in Centurion until Sunday, December 10. Normal operations will resume on Monday, December 11.
He said residents and clients of the Kruger Avenue Garden refuse site are advised to make use of other sites as an alternative.
“The city strongly urges residents and clients of the garden refuse sites to refrain from dumping waste on the parameters of the sites, as this is regarded as an illegal dumping activity.”
He said whoever contravenes the Tshwane Waste Management By-law is liable to a penalty fee of R5 000.
“The Tshwane metro profusely apologises for any inconvenience that may be caused by these inevitable closures of the affected garden refuse sites,” said Bokaba.
