Tshwane warns of possible water supply interruption in the east

Various areas in the east of Pretoria will be without water for up to 12 hours on Wednesday, December 6 due to maintenance work.

Tshwane spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said on December 6, the metro would conduct maintenance work on the supply network in Portion 475 Rietvalleirand 337- JR.

“This essential work is expected to last for eight hours, from 08:00 until 16:00, and may result in water supply interruptions.”

The following areas could possibly be affected:

– East of Delmas Road
– West of Atterbury Road
– South of De Villebois Mareuil Road

On the same day, Tshwane will also upgrade the supply network in Silverton.

“This essential work is expected to last for 12 hours, from 08:00 until 20:00 and will result in a water supply interruption,” said Mashigo.

The following suburbs supplied by the Garsfontein Direct 5 Reservoir Area will be affected:
– La Concorde
– Meyerspark Ext 8
– Nellmapius Proper and Ext 9 to 12, Salieshoek
– Silverton Extensions 5, 7 and 11

Mashigo said the metro apologised for the inconvenience.

He said Tshwane was further experiencing high water consumption, despite continuous calls for residents to use water sparingly to avert a situation where there is no supply.

“The soaring temperatures have led to a substantial increase in water usage, which has pushed our water supply system to its limits, putting our reservoirs under immense pressure.

“If this trend continues, it could potentially lead to serious water shortages across the city.”

“It is therefore incumbent upon every resident of the city to be water-conscious to ensure we keep our reservoirs at acceptable water levels,” said Mashigo.

Residents are urged to make the following water conservation measures part of their normal lifestyle:

– Do not water or irrigate gardens with hosepipes or sprinkler systems between 06:00 and 18:00.
– Do not wash vehicles with hosepipes.
– Do not fill swimming pools.

Residents are urged to continue using grey water to water gardens and flush toilets.

Where possible, water-saving devices should be installed.

Residents should report water leaks, burst pipes and all incidents that waste water.

Residents should also make water conservation part of their everyday lives by making use of these water-saving tips:

– Instal a low-flow shower head and tap aerators where possible.
– Use a dual-flush toilet cistern.
– Plant indigenous or drought-resistant shrubs in the garden.
– Use a broom instead of a hosepipe when cleaning driveways or patios.
– Collect rainwater to reuse in the garden or wash the car.
– Cover the swimming pool to reduce water evaporation.
– Take a short shower rather than a bath.
– Close a running tap while brushing teeth or shaving.
– Regularly check toilets and taps for leaks
