Accused murderer in Maubane Tavern stabbing case appears in Temba court

A 26-year-old man accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend, and attempting to kill his current partner, has appeared before the Temba Magistrate’s Court this week, where his case was postponed for a formal bail application.

The accused, Lazarus Lito Anthonio from Carousel View, is facing charges of murder and attempted murder.

He stands accused of fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend, 20-year-old Kgaugelo Marota, at Dubai Tavern in Maubane Village in the early hours of August 21.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Lumka Mahanja, said in a statement that Anthonio went to the Dubai Tavern, in Maubane Village, where he stabbed Marota. He then allegedly went to his house, where he tried to kill his current girlfriend.

“In the early hours of August 22, the police received information about the accused’s whereabouts, and he was arrested,” Mahanjana continued.

Police arrested Anthonio in Carousel View after he allegedly posted the reasons for his actions on social media.

Mahanjana confirmed that the matter was postponed to September 5, 2025, for a formal bail application.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Adéle Myburgh, said Marota had sustained multiple stab wounds and was declared dead on the scene by Emergency and Medical Rescue Services.

“Investigations revealed that after allegedly killing Marota, the suspect returned to his house, where he stabbed his 20-year-old girlfriend several times.

“She survived the attack and was rushed to a local hospital, where she is receiving medical treatment,” said Myburgh.
