Pickpocketing suspects caught with stolen phones, to face magistrate

The trio was arrested in Wierdabrug after police and security partners intercepted a suspicious BMW, uncovering stolen phones connected to incidents in Brooklyn and Menlyn.

Three suspects are expected to appear in the Hatfield Magistrate’s Court on Thursday morning, following their arrest for pickpocketing in the Wierdabrug policing precinct on Sunday.

Brooklyn Police Station commander Colonel Kushie Pietersen confirmed the court appearance, stating that the men were linked to several cases of cellphone theft in Brooklyn.

According to police spokesperson Johan van Dyk, officers intercepted a grey BMW in the Wierdabrug area after receiving information from a joint team of security companies and wardens.

“The vehicle was searched, and three stolen phones as well as three phones belonging to the suspects were found,” Van Dyk said.

He added that the occupants admitted they came from Menlyn, where they had already stolen two phones, and were on their way to pickpocket in Brooklyn.

Van Dyk said the vehicle did not belong to any of the suspects and had cloned plates, with the disc containing the true identification of the car.

“The suspects were escorted to Wierdabrug police station, where they were detained and charged,” said Van Dyk.
