Gauteng Traffic Police urges safety during Heritage Day celebrations

Motorists are reminded to drive within prescribed speed limits, avoid driving under the influence, and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on their journeys.

The Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP) is urging the public to prioritise safety while travelling to cultural events and gatherings across the province and beyond to celebrate Heritage Day on September 24.

With many families expected on the roads, law enforcement agencies anticipate an increase in traffic volumes.

The GTP has called on motorists and other road users to exercise caution, patience, and strict adherence to traffic laws during the busy holiday period.

Motorists are reminded to drive within prescribed speed limits, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on their journeys.

GTP stressed that reckless driving not only endangers the driver but also puts passengers and other road users at risk.

It will, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, deploy officers across Gauteng’s major routes to maintain visibility, enforce compliance, and take firm action against offenders.

“Our aim is to save lives and ensure that people travel safely while celebrating Heritage Day,” it said.

People have also been encouraged to prioritise the safety of vulnerable groups, including the elderly, women, children, and people living with disabilities.

The traffic police highlighted the importance of being vigilant and mindful of the needs of these groups, both on the roads and during community celebrations.

Holidaymakers are urged to respect and protect the province’s heritage sites.

Any acts of vandalism should be reported to the nearest police station to safeguard national cultural and historical landmarks for future generations.

“This Heritage Day, let us not only celebrate our rich history and diverse culture but also embrace our collective responsibility to build a safer and more secure Gauteng for all,” the GTP said.
