Chess tournament inspires young minds

It attracted many promising young chess players from across Gauteng, all hungry for checkmates and championships.

Young chess players from across Gauteng, all hungry for checkmates and championships, came together to participate in a chess tournament over the weekend.

The 30 youngsters participated in ‘Minds in Motion: The Ultimate u/16 Chess Tournament Lights Up’ organised by the Rise and Shine Chess Club.

The event was held at Dr Monare Primary school in Mamelodi west on Saturday, with Arbiter Angela Segopotse said it attracted promising young chess players from Gauteng.

Segopotse said chess teaches more than just moves, it teaches discipline, patience, and resilience.

“The participants were learners aged between 10 and 16 and these learners are not just competing; they’re growing their brains behind the boards,” she said.

The tournament was proudly judged by a dedicated panel of chess enthusiasts and community leaders, and each judge brought deep experience and a passion for nurturing young minds.

“What we’re doing here is bigger than trophies,” said judge Nelly Manyashi. “We’re building thinkers and leaders of tomorrow.”

CEO of the club, Khothatso Makoro, said the club with a vision is based in Mamelodi, and has long been a beacon of opportunity for children in the community.

Makoro said the club is also known for its after-school programmes and weekend chess clinics, seeing chess as a tool for empowerment.

“Our mission has always been to show that brilliance lives right here in the township.”

Another judge, Glan Matlatla said, “Chess is a way out, a way up, and a way forward.”

Matlala said this tournament was more than just a competition, it was a celebration of youth potential in Mamelodi.

“We are planning to host the tournament annually,” said Matlala.

“Next year, we hope to bring in players from other provinces and even cross-border clubs. The sky’s the limit,” said Matlala.
