Residents frustrated over prolonged outage in Klerksoord AH

Households remain in the dark with no clear update. The metro states the repairs may take up to eight hours to complete.

Parts of Klerksoord AH were left without electricity following overhead line damage linked to a fault at the Wolmer Substation in Pretoria, with repair teams working to restore power to affected residents.

According to Tshwane Metro’s Rosslyn Electricity Depot on Sunday night, the outage forms part of a broader medium-voltage electricity disruption affecting several areas supplied by the substation.

The cause of the outage remains unknown, while technical teams continue on-site assessments and repairs.

The affected areas in Klerksoord AH include multiple residential addresses, such as Sapphire, Diamant, Topaas, Ametis and Akwamaryn streets.

While some households have had their electricity supply temporarily restored through consumer backfeeding, not all customers are benefiting from this interim solution.

The metro confirmed that one section, feeding from overhead lines marked at pole K108, will remain without power.

“This follows damage caused by trees, which resulted in the overhead line breaking. Repair work is currently underway to address the damaged lines and ensure the area is safe before full restoration can take place.”

The metro mentioned that technicians identified a faulty cable between Wolmer Substation panel B17 and T4 Diamont/Willem Cruywagen.

Due to the nature of the fault, back feeding is not possible in this section, further delaying restoration for some residents. Teams remain on site working to repair the damaged infrastructure.

Residents expressed frustration over the prolonged outage, particularly given the uncertainty around restoration timelines.

“We understand that faults happen, but being without electricity for hours with no clear update is very difficult, especially for families with small children,” said Doreen Meyer from Diamant Street.

“There’s no power, and when it’s dark like this, people start worrying about safety. We just want the issue fixed as soon as possible.”

The metro indicated that teams are actively attending to the fault and that the estimated time of restoration for Wolmer Substation-related outages is about eight hours, although this may change depending on the complexity of repairs and safety assessments.

While progress has been made through backfeeding in certain sections, the metro cautioned that full restoration can only occur once all cable and overhead line repairs are completed.

Residents are urged to treat all electrical infrastructure as live and to avoid damaged lines or fallen poles.

The metro has also appealed for patience while technicians work under challenging conditions to stabilise the network.
