The little baby Moses was oblivious to his mother’s great faith when he was drifting down the river Nile in the snug waterproofed basket she had woven. Pharaoh was engaged in genocide, the killing of all male Jewish babies. Moses’ mother did what any normal mother would do. She just wanted to protect her baby. Yet it was her faith that gave her this ingenious plan we read of in Exodus 2.

If faith is a fact, then faith is always an act. Faith can never be passive. Your faith should move you into action. “To have faith is to be sure of the things we hope for, to be certain of the things we cannot see.” (Hebrews 11:1 in Good News Translation) To please God we need faith and without faith it is impossible to please God, says Hebrews 11:6.

The faith of Moses’ mother paid off. Through God’s providence he was rescued from the river by Pharaoh’s daughter and later Moses led a whole nation out of slavery. As a parent you should earnestly pray for faith to visualise the potential of the children God has given you. God desires to great things through our children and has already prepared good works beforehand so that they can walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10)

I need to ask myself: “Am I living a life of faith, or am I just fooling myself and attempting to fool others?” Genuine faith will always adhere to the Word of God, otherwise it is faulty faith. Genuine faith has God’s will as its compass bearing. By following this compass, we can direct all our decisions and choices towards God’s protection, deliverance and blessing.

Little baby Moses grew up to be a hero of faith, just like his mother. Although he was raised in the lap of luxury and pleasure in Pharaoh’s palace, he could not stomach the continued oppression of his own nation. Like his mother, his faith compelled him to act, and in doing so, he became a hero of faith and was listed among the history makers in Hebrews chapter 11.

“This is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith.” (1 John 5:4) Faith that acts.
