Sport Highlights 12 to 14 August
In times like this, when a big international event like the Olympic Games is underway, all other there is not much other important action on the country’s sports fields to take note off.
Although the Olympic Games will take up most of the sports fans’ attention, there is a lot of action on the sports fields to look forward to this weekend.
Olympic Games
The Olympic Games are now in full swing. South Africa’s attention this weekend will be mainly in athletics, swimming, rowing finals and golf field, where local star Brandon Stone will participate.
Rugby
The Currie Cup tournament started last week, but because of all the attention on the SuperRugby final, the age-old Cup remained in the background. After the Blue Bulls started with a big win against WP, they this week face a major challenge in the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.
* In Pretoria rugby fans have the option to support club rugby this weekend, when the finals of the Carton league (senior 1, 2 and 3, under 20and under 21) take place at Loftus B and Loftus C.
Cricket
South Africa’s A-team is still touring Australia and they are currently playing in a tri-series against their Australian and Indian counterparts. They will play Australia again on Saturday 13 August and Wednesday against India.
Athletics
The Macro Wierie Road Race, consisting of a 21,1km half marathon, a 10km road race and a 5km fun run takes place on Saturday 13 August. The race starts and ends at Macro in Centurion, off the John Vorster/N1 off-ramp. The half marathon and 10km race start at 06:30 and the fun run at 07:00.
