Proteas speedster Kagiso Rabada suspended by ICC

He was found guilty for making ‘inappropriate and deliberate physical contact' with Australia captain Steve Smith.

Proteas speedster Kagiso Rabada was on Monday suspended for two test matches by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for “breaching the code of conduct”.

Rabada was found guilty of an ICC Level 2 offence of “inappropriate and deliberate physical contact” with Australia captain Steve Smith, according to ICC.

The 22-year-old bowler was also fined 50 percent of his match fee and earned three demerit points.

“Rabada has accumulated eight demerit points within a 24-month period automatically leading to a two-match suspension. The incident happened in the 52nd over of Australia’s first innings of the second Test, when moving towards the slips, Rabada made contact with Smith with his shoulder,” ICC said in a statement.

Jeff Crowe of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees said the youngster made deliberate contact with the Aussie skipper.

“I found that there was contact between Rabada and Smith, and in my judgement, the contact by Rabada was inappropriate and deliberate. He had the opportunity to avoid the contact, and I could not see any evidence to support the argument that the contact was accidental,” he said.

“I take no pleasure in seeing a player suspended, particularly a young player of Kagiso’s talent, but he has now breached the ICC Code of Conduct on a number of occasions.”

Speaking to the media after taking 11 wickets in the second test, Rabada said he was disappointed.

“I’ve let myself and the team down, I have to see it as a learning curve and not repeat the same mistake,” he said.

“It gives me a chance to do other things and improve my game and think about things a bit more. I’m not happy about it, but time moves on.”

He will now miss the rest of the series which is currently tied 1-all with two matches to go.
