SPORT: Simbine, Van der Burgh win gold at the Commonwealth games
Local sprinter Akani Simbine finished ahead of former champion Yohan Blake in the 100m final.
Local sprinter Akani Simbine won the 100m final at the Commonwealth games held in Australia on Monday afternoon.
The 24-year-old won with an impressive time of 10.03 ahead of former champion Yohan Blake, who managed to finish third.
Simbine’s fellow South African Henricho Bruintjies finished second, earning himself a silver medal at the event.
The 100m final saw the two SA sprinters against the second fastest man, Blake.
Although the Jamaican was favourite to win, a poor start meant that he had to fight for bronze as he was unable to challenge Simbine and Bruintjies.
Earlier in the day, Pretoria born swimmer Cameron van der Burgh won gold in the 50m breaststroke at the games.
