Mamelodi cricket star has his fingers in many pies
“I want to help the young people who want to play cricket…the more the merrier.”
A young man from Mamelodi has proved himself a jack of all trades cricket and master of all.
Koketso Phalama of Mamelodi West section A1 started playing as a bowler but two years, thought he would try his hand at batting.
Soon his teammates were calling him Virat after India cricket captain Virat Kohli, for his dominance at the crease.
The 25-year-old quickly moved up team ranks leading to his promotion to the senior Mamelodi Cricket team where he still playing in the Promotion Cricket League.
“In 2013 I started coaching and last year led my under 13 side to the Platinum Cricket crown.
I was very happy with that but my goal this year is to win gold in the Under 15 Cricket League,” he said adding he still had ambition as a player.
“I still want to turn out for the Titans as a professional.”
Last year Phalama was named batsman of the season in the promotion league, and made his best score 157 runs, achieved against the Centurion Cricket team.
Phalama is currently taking his level 3 coaching classes, he already is a proud recipient of levels 1 and 2 coaching licences.
From Monday to Thursday he coaches the under 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17 from 14:30 to 17:30 “to plough back into his community”.
“I could not have achieved what I have were it not for the coaches who believed in me when back in 2000 when I started out,” said Phalama
“I want to help the young people who want to play cricket… the more the merrier.”
